Quick Start with Live Streaming (Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder)

For the Spanish version / Para la versión Español

This is a quick start guide for live streaming. It's broken into a 17 step process doing the bare bones before you are up and going (you might experience difficulties on Mobile Devices):

1) Create a live stream by clicking on the camera icon seen above or + Create New

2) Choose a name and click on HTML5 for the Channel type.

3) Once you have saved, click on Encoder Setup

4) Publishing point: Our system auto-detects and optimizes the selection of the publishing point based on the location of your stream.

5) Multi-bitrates:  Our player is adaptive and automatically detects your encoder multi-bitrate settings to provide the best quality stream to your viewers based upon their connections.

6) Click on Next Step

7) Click on Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE)

8) If you don't have it yet - Download the software

9) Install the software and then open it.

10) Go back to the DaCast backend, in the encoder set-up section of your channel, step 3.

  • For HTML5 channels: take note of the Stream URL, the Stream name as well as the Login and Password (2 series of 6 digits)
12) Go back to the encoder (FMLE)

  • For HTML5 channels: Enter the Stream URL in the "FMS URL" field: rtmp://
  • For HTML5 channelsEnter the stream name in the 'Stream' field: dclive_1_150@195055

15) Please note that if you are planning on having multi-bitrates, you might want to do small changes:
  • For HTML5 channels: replace 150 by %i
    dclive_1_150@195055 => dclive_1_%i@195055

16) For HTML5 channelsclick on Connect and enter the login (username) and password you took note of.
17) Before lauching the stream, make sure you have a Keyframe frequency of 2 or 3 seconds and nothing else when clicking on the format settings. You should be having the following settings : fmle.png
18) Click on Start - you are now streaming!

To preview your stream go back to the DaCast backend and click on Preview.
Note that it can take up to 50 seconds to come up online for "All devices" channels. So be patient :)

fmle crashes after step 13, is not the software because i runs ok with livestream fms url, there is anyway to just know the fms url so i can type it in stream. or do I have to buy a plan in order to?

    Hi Santiago,

The XML shouldn't be causing the software encoder to crash.

That said, if you want to manually type in the streaming information, you can do that by selecting OTHER RTMP ENCODER instead of Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder. When you do this it will present the information that you enter directly into the encoder.

What's the name of the XML profile you are trying to open? It should not be "startup.xml" but "DaCast_"the_name_of_your_channel".xml

I was downloading the wrong channel file. There was already a channel set up and I was downloading from a new channel I set up.

If you open up the XML profile, both the FMS URL and the Stream information will be there. If you prefer to manually enter these in, choose OTHER RTMP ENCODER from ENCODER SETUP. This will list out the two fields so you can copy and paste them directly into the encoder.

Please tell me if you need more clarification on this.

Hi Hanklam, Is that a All Device (HTML5) channel or a Legacy Flash channel? The latter do not ask for a login and password. If you are confused on the difference between these two at all, please open up the chat in the lower right so you can ask one of our representatives for more details.

Please note that there is no XML file anymore.
You can easily set up your encoder by doing the manual configuration as explained in this updated tutorial.
