TriCaster Documentation

Note: This documentation uses an older version of the TriCaster hardware. For more updated information, please reference this offsite guide.

DaCast is completely compatible with flash supporting encoders, including the NewTek TriCaster. Setting up to record over a TriCaster is easy, just setting the acquisition method to “Professional Encoder” in DaCast and entering in the needed details.

After launching TriCaster, click the “New+” button to launch a new session. This will display a series of options where the session name can be entered, video standard and resolution before clicking “Start Session”.

Following this is a screen with three options for Live, Manage, Graphics and Edit. With “Live” highlighted, click “Start Live Production” to begin.

Clicking this will launch the main interface of TriCaster with views for all the monitors, a timetable below and other applications. On this, there is a little button called “Stream” on the upper right, just below the Program Out monitor.

Click the gear icon next to Stream to launch the “Stream Configuration” dropdown. Select Adobe Flash as “Stream Type”. At the right of this is the frame rate, resolution size and bitrate options that can be configured.
Once the desired stream quality is selected, the Properties can then be filled in so the TriCaster can communicate directly with the DaCast servers. The only two critical areas to be filled in here are “Location” and “Stream ID”.

To find this information, login to your DaCast account and go to the “Live” setting. Create a new live channel, set to “Professional Encoder” as the acquisition method, or select one previously created. Under “Stream”, you will have “Stream URL” and “Stream Name” listed for the channel.

Back in TriCaster, under “Stream Configuration”, place the “Stream URL” in “Location” and “Stream Name” in “Stream ID”. Leave the username and password blank and enter any file name you wish at the top. Now click “Close”. When you are ready to broadcast, click the “Stream” button next to the gear where the options were configured to begin live streaming over the internet through DaCast.

Please note, for All Device (HTML5) channels, you will need to change the stream name (listed Stream ID inside TriCaster) in the following way:

dclive_1_150@[unique#]

to

dclive_%i_150@[unique#]

The [unique#] area will be different for every live stream, and the end should come to the 1 before the @ symbol by replacing it with %i

Here is an example:

dclive_%i_150@12345

Side note : To ensure best quality of your stream the keyframe interval has to be set up at 2-3s. With TriCaster you have nothing to worry about as it is set to use a 2 seconds key frame interval by default.

Putting all these options does not work when using an HTML 5 channel. Any suggestions?

    Greetings,

Have you tried putting in the Username and Password that are found under ENCODER SETUP in the final step? Should be a series of six digits for each.

Tried that and it comes back as invalid.

    Greetings,

Have you streamed before using the encoder and the Flash streams? Just trying to verify if the problem is with the login aspect of the HTML5.

Yes, I have used the flash streaming on my tricaster using the login username and password for the site.

    Greetings,

The Flash streaming shouldn't require a login.

When entering a login for the HTML5, this is a series of numbers like found here:

    Anthony,

It's nice to know that I didn't need to use a username and password on the flash stream.

For HTML5, I am still not able to stream using the series of numbers from the stream (which I have been using since the start).

I have tried Flash and Windows Media Push to send the stream out to the HTML5 stream, Both are coming back with errors.

Flash error: Unknown User. Please enter valid Username/Password. (It is the numbers listed in the HTML5 stream).
Windows Media Push: Please check URL and try again. (Using the full URL listed in the HTML5 stream).

    Greetings,

Just to confirm, have you tried and are able to stream on Flash channel?

Realize the end goal is to publish on HTML5, but just checking on this as it would rule out if it was a general problem or if its an issue with the login portion.

Yes, if I am trying to stream to a Flash channel, it works.

    Greetings,

Hmm... that is troubling. Can you come into our support chat so we can try to assist you?

    Afternoon,

    GOT IT!

When you select "Other RTMP Encoder" (TriCaster being one of the other) on Edit Live Stream/ Encoder Setup, it gives you a stream ID of "dclive_1_1@######".

Selecting Flash and Importing the XML has a stream ID of "dclive_1_%i@######". < This one allowed it to work.

Assuming the software across all newer versions of tricaster are the same, this will work on 40, 410, 460, 860, 8000.
